2019 Nebraska Artist Biennial

The original Nebraska Biennial began in 1932 with Grant Wood as its first judge. Today, the Biennial has been revived at Gallery 1516 as a showcase of the best work by Nebraska artists.

What is the Biennial?

The Biennial is a juried exhibition of Nebraska artwork, chosen from over 600 submissions from across the state. Every submission was reviewed by a panel of four judges from Kearney, Lincoln, and Omaha; the judging was done blind to ensure unbiased selections.

This year’s exhibition features the work of over 90 Nebraska artists across 8 categories: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics/pottery, sculpture, multimedia/other, and a student division.

Artwork in the exhibition is eligible for one of a series of cash prizes. Best in Show will receive a $2500 prize. A winner will also be selected from each of the 8 categories and receive a $500 prize.

The Biennial also features two unique prizes: Artists’ Choice and People’s Choice.

Artwork is for sale, and 100% of the sale price goes directly to the artist. Gallery 1516 never charges artists commission fees.
