MONA2Omaha at Gallery 1516

Now thru March 26, 2017

As an integral part of our mission, we welcome the second coming of MONA2Omaha traveling exhibitions, our first collaboration featured an impressive array of landscape art from the museum’s collection. Our mission to celebrate the work of artists who were born, lived, trained, or worked in Nebraska or who created artworks that reflect the culture of Nebraska. This time around, Photo Stories includes 60+ selections that span 150 years of diverse photography from 20 regional, national and international photographer/artists.

While the exhibition is not dominated by a particular genre or style, MONA curator Russ L. Erpelding said that “the earliest images in the exhibition focus more on documentation of the area and its inhabitants, Native American and pioneer settlers.”

These as well as more modern photos of Nebraska landscape and culture, include the following highlights: the earliest Alfred Bierstadt stereoview, 1860 “Unpacking Goods for the Indians”, seven original Solomon Butcher sod house images; Herman Heyn’s striking 1899 image of “Eddie Plenty Holes”; 18-Wright Morris images from MONA’s collection of 170; MONA’s newest purchase, Robert Adam’s “Nebraska Highway 2, Box Butte County 1978”. In addition viewers may enjoy a famous image of Marilyn Monroe from Nebraska photographer Bill Ray, “Happy Birthday Mister President”, taken at said event while Bill was working for Life Magazine, and his image of Barry Goldwater’s mother “Jojo” whose iconic image is a reminder of how glamorous smoking can be!

This exhibition will appeal to both photographers and non-photographers, you will be impressed with the scope and depth of the MONA collection…seeing this traveling exhibition will give you yet another reason to make a trip to Kearney to see the rest of their collection.

Gallery 1516 will schedule exhibitions of Nebraska and regional artists. Under our unique "no commission" policy, all proceeds from work sold go to the artist.

To be eligible for exhibition artists must submit application to the Gallery in advance. Work will be selected by our curators.
